Maybe your New Year’s resolution was not a specific goal to save money, but that doesn’t mean you can’t cut some expenses in the coming year by making some simple changes in the way you do things. One great way to save money all year is joining us in the 52 week Money Saving challenge. Here are 10 ways you can save money in the New Year:
10 Ways to Save Money In The New Year
1. Make some of your own cleaning supplies. You would be amazed at how much you can save just by not buying common household cleaners such as laundry soap. Did you know you can make your own for 3 cents a load?
2. Stop buying convenience. The amount of money we pay just for convenience is astounding. One simple way you can cup this expense is to not hit up a drive-thru for coffee anymore. You can make your own at home coffee with a high quality coffee maker and save yourself 30-40 dollars a month.
3. Plan all your meals. This seems like a tedious task until you get into a pattern. Start by making a list of the meals your family eats frequently and then shopping for just that week. In no time, you will get the hang of it and won’t be spending money on wasted food. You can grab some savvy meal planning tips and meal planning printables here.
4. Find ways to entertain yourself and your family that are free or very low cost. Most communities have tons of free family activities going on every week and many of them are very fun and a great way to get to know people in your community. Fun does not have to equal money spent.
5. Pay bills on time. This seems like a no-brainer, but if you are always running a week or even a couple days behind on bill die dates, those late fees could really be racking up. Imagine if a place you pay late charges just $5 if you are a few days late. If you do this over the course of a year, you are looking at wasting $60!
6. Pop some tags at the thrift shop. You would be amazed at what you can save by simply buying pre-owned items. Name brand clothes, small appliances still in boxes and very nice holiday decorations all at a fraction of the price. Many of them are still in new condition. 7. Get serious about gas savings. Make sure you are getting the best deal on gas by joining gas savings programs often offered by grocery store chains and check GasBuddy.com for the best price in your area.
8. Before making a large purchase, sit on it. Impulse buying can cause you to loose a lot of money if you do it frequently. If something is a larger purchase or you are not sure if it will be useful, promise yourself to sit on it for a full day before going back if you decide you really need it.
9. Skip eating out when you can. When you start to meal plan, have several meals on hand that can be thrown together in a hurry or invest in a slow-cooker for those days when you just don’t have much time. You will be less tempted to eat out.
10. Sign up for discount cards and learn how to use them. Just about every chain store offers one and you could save so much money by just using them.
