5 Ways You Might Be Missing BIG Savings at Meijer

Meijer is a regional chain that is credited with being the first hypermarket store in the United States. In the last two years, the company has made an overhaul to their saving systems. The practice of doubling coupons was ended and the new mPerks saving program was improved. The chain also gave their coupon acceptance policies a makeover. The result has been more discount options and an increased opportunity in stacking to maximize savings.

Competitor Coupons – Meijer began accepting competitor’s coupons in October of 2013. It completely changed the way consumers can save thanks to opening up more deals. For example, if you are hunting for a coupon on, say, pizza, and cannot find a manufacturer coupon, but find a Target coupon store for pizza, you can use that.

Note their coupon policy defines a competitor coupon, so make sure you follow their acceptance terms:

Meijer will accept competitor coupons from Food Retailers or Mass Merchandise Retailers. Meijer defines Mass Merchandise Retailers as a retail store offering both food and general merchandise/apparel under one roof. Coupons from Club Stores and Dollar Stores will not be accepted.

Coupon Stacking – Since competitor’s coupons are processed as store coupons, you can combine these with manufacturer coupons. This can double the savings and, when paired with sales, can give you deep discounts.

Please note that experiences have been mixed as the new changes took awhile to convey to employees. Since the introduction, Meijer’s Corporate Facebook page has answered and addressed many issues customers were having with the acceptance of competitor’s coupons and confirmed, “You may combine one Target (competitor) coupon with one manufacturer coupon. Target “store” coupons and Target “web” coupons are the same.”  So, if the cashier gives you any issue, ask to speak with a manager. It is also suggest printing the coupon policy and taking it with you on your trips. I have a big write up about how clear this policy is and even information from Meijer Corporate- you can read more about that HERE (Does Meijer Accept Other Store Coupons {info & answer})

Meijer mPerks In the past, this program was limited to a limited supply of virtual coupons you clipped. Now, they offer store coupons and manufacturer coupons. You simply sign up for the program using a mobile number. Login into the program with your computer, tablet or even a smartphone and virtually “clip” the coupons you want. Then, during checkout, you click the mPerks tab on the credit card reader and enter your mPerks registered mobile number and password you create. This is another way to increase your stacking options. This system also offers a special reoccurring discount that appears (on average) once a month that allows you to save 5%-15% on your TOTAL grocery, health and beauty or general merchandise purchase. For those doing 1 stop shopping, this is a great savings opportunity! Guests with a Meijer credit card often get a “bonus” round of these discounts.

mPerks Rewards – This addition to mPerks is newer option. Each month guests can choose 3 rewards to “earn” in the “Personalized” category; the “Pharmacy” category allows you to credits for every 5 prescriptions you fill in store that add up to savings you choose that vary between a percentage off your final bill, savings on fuel or $10 off a purchase of $10 or more. Similarly, “Baby” rewards track your baby related purchase. Once you spend $100 on baby items, you are rewarded with credits that can be used to save up to $50 off a $50 purchase! All these are “earned” by purchases you are already making.

Mejier Credit Card – With the Meijer Platinum Mastercard, you earn rewards for every dollar you spend.  You save across the store with rewards coupons for every 1,500 points you earn. A 15% off general merchandise and apparel discount is offered along with 5% off grocery and health & beauty care, exclusive savings events throughout the year and 5 cents off per gallon of Meijer gas, every day.

Trish shared this tip: “Another Small Way To Save Is To Watch The Mperks Coupons For Coupons On Visa, Mastercard Or AmEx Gift Cards. They Occasionally Offer A $10 Off A $100 Card. So Basically, You Pay $90 For The Card And The Activation Fee (Typically $5-$6) And You Get A $100 Gift Card That Can Be Used Anywhere! That’s $95-$96 For $100! I Typically Turn Around And Use It And Then Some, Buying My Groceries At Meijer. Just A Small Way To Save A Few More Bucks!”

I’ve been shopping at Meijer’s for over 25 years and I look forward to going there every week. Their in house brands are fantastic and their cake mix is the one I use if I don’t bake from scratch. It’s a rare occasion if I can leave the store in under two hours on my weekly shopping trips. We’re lucky that there are several locations in our area. Love the m-perks also!

Hello Tatanisha. I’m new at Mitten Full of Savings, but have shopped at Meijer for over 30 years. A few years ago, I could use a manufactures coupon and MPerks coupon on a single item purchase, then that was discontinued shortly thereafter. Okay, I accept that. But, today, if I purchase …let’s say Secret deodorant. Occasionally, I see a $2.00 manufacture’s coupon and a $2.00 off MPerk coupon. I purchase two Secret deodorants, but Meijer will only accept one coupon. I can’t use the manufacture’s coupon and MPerks on the same transaction, even though I am purchasing two deodorants. Can you shed some light on this. Thanks

Hi Willard and welcome to AMFOS! I’m happy to have you hear. Okay, let’s talk about a few things.
First, if the mPerk coupon is a manufacturer coupon, then yes, you are right- you cannot use the mPerk manufacturer coupon and the paper coupon on one item. HOWEVER, if the mPerk coupon is a store coupon, you can use both. So, let’s say you had a $2/1 coupon for Secret Deodorant that was a manufacturer coupon and you had a $2/1 Secret Deodorant (or sometimes you will see the $3 off $10 on personal hygiene products, etc) and it’s a STORE coupon, you can use both.

Second- if you are buying TWO secret deodorants, and you have (1) $2/1 manufacturer coupon and (1) $2/1 mPerk that is a manufacturer coupon, as long as you are buying TWO you can use both. You have one coupon for every item you are buying. If you were only buying ONE secret deodorant, the system will ask you which coupon you want to use, the mPerk or the paper coupon.

Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions!
