52 Money Save Ways: Week 38: Re-use Everything You Can
Looking back at the previous 37 weeks, I can’t believe I never talked about this specifically as this is one way I save money extensively! Making things last longer or finding creative ways to re-use things is something I really enjoy because I love that it is not only healthy for the environment, but also great on my budget. Here are some ways I re-use common items that most people throw away:
Plastic grocery bags: for cleaning out the litter box, putting in small trash cans around the house, pouring my cooking grease into before I throw it in my garbage, placing on my hair when I dye it for added coloring strength and drip control and putting wet suits in after swimming. This saves me from having to buy small trash can liners! I don’t think I ever have since I keep a supply of these around!
Plastic containers from food: I use sour cream containers, butter containers and other food containers as storage for leftovers, craft supplies, change and even nail polish! This saves me from having to buy plastic containers to store these things in.
Glass pasta sauce jars: These come in handy for things like mixing up some salad dressing, storing bacon grease in (for flavor when cooking), homemade yogurt, screws and bolts and I even drink out of them. I also use them for things like melting beeswax in a pot of water for certain DIY projects. This keeps me from having to buy glass storage containers.
Plastic produce bags: I always felt bad about tossing these after I got my produce home from the store so I started using them for storing homemade bread, but they could also be used for picking up your dog’s “deposits” when walking them as well.
Yogurt Containers: I used to use these for putting paint in for my daughter when she was little so she could finger paint. They could also be used as small containers for starting seedlings in the Spring.
As you can see, if you get creative enough, you can really use a lot of things more than once and it saves you from having to buy the marketed product for the use. Next time you go to toss something, think to yourself, “What can I use this for?” and see what you can come up with!
