This is week 39 of the 52 Week Money Challenge so if you are following along, place $39 into your 52 Week Money Challenge jar or $18 if you are doing the challenge in reverse. 52 Money Save Ways: Week 39: Freezer Cooking

First, if you have never heard of freezer cooking, let’s do a little run-down. Freezer cooking is making meals ahead of time, portioning them out with all (or most) of the ingredients you will need and placing them in your freezer so all you need to simply do is thaw and cook. These kinds of meals are perfect for those that use their slow cooker a lot or are on the go and need meals that are mostly already prepared. In other words, it is making your own frozen dinners.

Generally speaking, freezer cooking can save you quite a bit of money as it makes it easy to make meals fast, thereby making it less tempting top go out to eat or hit up the fast food drive thru. It also saves you money by allowing you to meal plan so you know exactly what you will need from the grocery store before you get there. This helps you watch your budget for food more closely.

Freezer cooking also saves you money by making it less likely that you will buy already made frozen meals and prepackaged goods. If you have the homemade version in your freezer right now, why would you buy the less nutritious and more expensive version from the store?

There are some things to keep in mind when it comes to freezer cooking:

You might feel like you are spending more because, initially, you are. In order to get enough for basic meals, you will often have to buy in bulk and buy things you may not ever buy. You will also have the added expense of the storage containers. You can, however, often use coupons and get freezer bags for very cheap or even free.

Don’t dive in full force. Start with just making half your dinners this way for a while. When you get more used to this style of cooking, it will get easier.

Know that not everything freezes well so plan your meals accordingly. Also, you can find a great deal of recipes online and on sites like Pinterest for freezer meals.

Set aside a good chunk of time each week to prep your freezer meals for the upcoming week. Time spent now will save you time later.
