When it comes to going green, most people don’t know where to start. They also worry about the cost of going green and if it is affordable or do-able for them. The truth is, going green does not have to be expensive or an all-or-nothing venture.
Going Green for Beginners
When deciding to go green, you must look at factors that it will present. Here we will look at these. Let’s start with one of the big myths.
“Going green will cost too much money.”
This is not true in most cases. If fact, one of the biggest reasons to go green is to save money. You will be re-using a lot of things in your green lifestyle so this will in turn save you money. I tend to really believe that going green and living frugally go hand in hand.
One of the best examples of this is very simple and anyone can implement it and that is re-use plastic shopping bags. You will save yourself, at the very least, from having to buy small trash can liners. They have many more uses than that, but it is one simple example.
How do you go green to start with?
It is simply an attitude of changing habits and buying behaviors. Many people who live frugally already do green things without intention of doing so. For instance, if you buy spices in bulk, you are not buying the packaging that shelf spices come in, therefore not wasting it.
Start looking for ways you can re-use things such as packaging. This is one simple step everyone can do that is an easy way to break into the green lifestyle. For instance, pasta sauce jars are great for storing leftovers, nuts and bolts in the garage and even for drinking out of. Plastic food tubs such as the ones found with sour cream or margarine are great to use for food storage containers as well. Just wash them out and re-use!
What are some simple changes I can make?
Going green does not have to mean you have to go in full speed. You can make simple changes that won’t be of inconvenience to your lifestyle. Here are some simple changes you can make right away:
- Reuse any food containers you can.
- Start saving plastic bags for things around the house such as picking up animal waste/litter box cleaning, holding wet swimsuits in the summer for transport home, covering your head for home hair dye jobs and small trash liners.
- Re-use any packing material you get to send things to others
- Save your coffee grounds for your garden this summer.
- Watch your electricity and light usage. Not only will your bills go down in this area, it is earth friendly.
- Walk when you can. Saving gas in your car saves you money and the earth.
