How to make a College Care Basket
It’s that time of year, time to head back to school! I don’t know about you, but it seems you hardly had time to come up for air and already school is starting. And for college kids it isn’t any easier, if anything it is even scarier. Because college is a whole other ball of wax. If high school is the minor league then college is the majors. You’re juggling not only classes, a harried social life and maybe even a work schedule too but you’re doing it solo. And if you’re away from home and on your own for the very first time in 18 years) then there’s extra pressure. All in all, it can be a shock to the system.
But isn’t this the thing you’ve been waiting for? But no parental oversight means just that, NO PARENTAL OVERSIGHT! Now, you’re on your own without mom or dad to rely on. It also means you’re paying for your own everything, i.e., detergent, hygiene supplies, clothes, etc. Yesterday, I shared 25 ways College Students can save money, so if you’re on a tight budget or just want to save money be sure to check it out.
But wouldn’t it be nice to receive a basket full of goodies?
And Parents, even though your child has left the nest and on their own, sending them care packages from home is just what they need. They already have enough on their plate, so they shouldn’t have to worry about whether or not there’s enough toothpaste or toilet paper. I remember going off to college and learning how to navigate all of these things on my own. Having those little care packages from home were perfect, they helped take the sting out of adulthood. And when you’re buying your own hygiene products, razors, etc. the cost can add up quickly! If you were like me, a struggling college student, it was nice to NOT have to pay for these items. Which means I have more money for Ramen noodles and Oreo’s.
Below I put together a list of must-have hygiene items you will need for college. I also have a list of essentials you will need for the Dorms. You can read the list here.
Parents, now back to you. Here’s a list of essentials that would be perfect for a College Care Basket.
First, you will need a basket. Or if you are mailing these items, skip the basket. It will just add more weight to your package. Just focus on packing the essentials.
And it has most of the day to day essentials:
- Schick® Razors
- Shaving Cream
- Body Wash
- Toothbrush
- Mouthwash
- Toothpaste
- Brush
- Heating Pad
- Toilet Paper
- Paper Towel
- Feminine Supplies
- Over the counter meds, such as pain relievers
- Hair Products
And definitely add a homey touch, add your child’s favorite cookies, sweets or a cherished photo.
These are the items you don’t miss until you need them. Funny how living on your own can change things. Of course, who wasn’t in a rush to get college life started? And it’s okay, that’s cool, you earned it. But college isn’t just all about book learning and partying. College is also the place where you begin to put into practice being a responsible adult. And in a way mom’s gift basket is a kind of mini-road map showing you what you’ll need along the way. So, when you get your gift basket take stock, make a list. Write down all the things she sent to you: the body wash, the deodorant, toilet paper and the Schick® Razors and email or text it to yourself.
Because in reality this is how parents show you they love and care for you, by giving you a few of the necessities you need to walk into adulthood smelling good and freshly shorn. And guess what?
Now you know what to get your little sister or younger brother when they begin college, because you’ve been there and you already know firsthand what they’re going to need.
My niece is off to college this year, so I put together a College Care Basket for her. First, I looked through my stockpile to see what items I already had on hand. I was surprised to discover I had most of the items at home.
However, I was out of razors. And a woman has got to have her razors. I decided to stop by Meijer on my way home to grab some. I also remember seeing some awesome BOGO Schick® printable coupons recently. So I printed those first:
*updated 8/20 Print your BOGO Schick® Disposable coupons HERE.
This coupon is no longer available! Head to their website for information and possible offers.
When I got to Meijer I was happy to find the Schick® Razors on sale! YAY! {You can find the Schick® Razors in the Health Department at your local Meijer}.
I decided to go with this brand because I personally use Schick® Razors and love the way they make a girl’s legs feel. The Quattro razors have a 4 titanium-coated blade system which feels great on my legs and doesn’t leave razor bumps or stubble.
I picked up two packs of Schick® Quattro Disposable Razors, 3 count for $6.29 each. I also picked up two packs for the Husband, the Schick® Hydro Men’s Disposable Razors, 3 count for $9.49.
And since I was using two BOGO coupons, I only paid for two razors! I paid $15.78 plus tax for all four razors (comes to about $3.94 per razor!). And because I shopped at Meijer, I was able to have these items count towards my health mPerk personalized rewards. Even better!
After checking out, I came home and put together this College Care Basket for my college bound niece.
I know my niece will appreciate receiving this College Care Basket. If you really want to add the basket, you should be able to find one at your local Hobby store, Meijer and even online.
Do you have a college student or know of someone who is going off to college? Consider making them a basket full of goodies and drop it in the mail. I am sure they will appreciate the thoughtful gesture.
And be sure to print your Schick® Razor coupons and head to Meijer (or your grocery store that carries Schick® products) to grab a few razors. Trust me, your legs will thank you!
