6 Ways to Save Money In College
We’ve been talking about a variety of different money save ways the last few months.
Well, let’s talk about College!
College is such an exciting time for most young adults. You are out on your own and ready to not only continue your education, but dip your feet into the water of independence. With this independence comes some financial freedom, but the college years can also be a time when money mistakes happen that can effect you for long after you get your degree if you are not careful. This is why it is important to save as much money as you can during the college years. Here are some tips on money save ways in college.
Rent your text books instead of buying them. It is not a surprise that text books are crazy expensive. Rather than shell out all that money on books you might only use for one semester, rent them or at least buy them used. You can save 90% by doing this. One great way to find used books for sale is to look on Amazon.
Carpool or ride public transportation to school or work. Many communities give free or at least discounted bus passes to those who are currently enrolled in school. Take advantage of it and skip taking your car where you will most likely struggle to find a spot to park and have to pay to park anyway.
Have roomies. This is a typical way to save money in college and for good reason. You can split the cost of bills and the price of basics such as food. You can find more ideas on ways to save for college and your savings tips on your dorm room and items with these frugal tips.
Coupon. Couponing is not just for old folks and soccer moms. Couponing just a little bit, even if it;’s just for personal care items (there are tons of coupons out there for deodorant, razors, toothpaste-you name it!) will save you some good amount of cash each month. If you’re ready to get started, then head over to the Couponing 101 section of the blog to find more tips.
Eat at home more often. While it is extremely tempting to eat out with friends and study groups while in college, resist the urge. You sill save way more money in your food budget if you simply eat at home. If you are terrible at cooking, check out some books from the library to learn and practice! If you still just find you cannot cook or don’t have the time, make sure to get the right meal plan if you will be eating on campus. Don’t get too much or too little. If you’re going to cook at home, then check out the recipe section of the blog for inspiration.
Don’t spend too much on entertainment. There are lots of free meet-ups to get involved in when you attend school. Join some clubs and meet some people with similar interests. Also, be sure to ask for a student discount any where you might go for entertainment. Most places offer one in college communities.
